Sanjay J. Poonen
Senior Vice President and General Manager, Performance Optimization Applications

Sanjay J. Poonen is senior vice president and general manager of Performance Optimization Applications at Business Objects, an SAP company. In this capacity, he is responsible for the Governance, Risk & Compliance (GRC) and Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) product lines, both areas where SAP is the market leader. Poonen reports to John Schwarz, CEO of Business Objects and member of the Executive Board of SAP AG.

Previously, Poonen served as vice president of Line of Business Operations at Symantec. Reporting to the president and vice-chairman, he played a key role in the merger integration of VERITAS and Symantec. Before the merger, Poonen was vice president of Strategic Operations at VERITAS, with sales responsibility for strategic OEM accounts, and drove new platform deals with hardware partners like HP, IBM, and Sun. Prior to joining VERITAS, Poonen served as an executive officer at Informatica, first as vice president and general manager of the Analytics Business Unit then as senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, establishing Informatica’s leadership in the data integration market.

Poonen was a member of the founder's circle at Alphablox (acquired by IBM), and worked at Apple Computer and Taligent (acquired by IBM). He began his career as a software engineer at Microsoft, working on early forms of Microsoft Exchange. Poonen has two patent awards to his credit, for software inventions at Taligent and Alphablox. He also serves on the board of Envision Schools, a pioneering charter school in the Bay Area.

Poonen holds a master's degree in business administration from Harvard Business School in Massachusetts, where he graduated as a Baker Scholar; a master's degree in management science and engineering from Stanford University, in California; and a bachelor's degree in computer science and math and engineering from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, where he graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa.
